Blogging about Blogging...

So I'm quite new to this crazy world of blogging, and I thought it would be fun to share with you some things I have learnt, and also some things I'm still working on... Really, I think I just wanted to do a bit of a casual/let's have a chat post, I feel that it's the online equivalent to a sit down over a cup of tea!

I always knew the blogging world existed. When I was interested in a beauty product I would hop on Google and see what other people thought and what it looked like on them or see what other people thought of a book I was interested in reading, but now that I am a part of this world I realise there is so much more to it.

In my almost two months as a blogger I feel like I am starting to get the hang of some things a little, my first few posts took me so long, between taking the photos, sorting through them, worrying about my wording, changing my mind and starting all over again, it was quite a process! Now I feel like I am getting my photos organised, my entire computer is just folders upon folders, it may not sound productive to some people, but it really is making my life easier!

I am also getting more organised, I have heard a few people mention having a notebook to jot down ideas, I love having this, I have little lists where I write down notes or start lists so I don't forget things (at the moment I am working on my January favourites post and I think if I had to sit down and think of all the products I loved during January I would struggle, never fear, trusty little notebook to the rescue!) I think this will be even more helpful on my return to work this week as my brain seems to function less efficiently when it is full of work info, does this happen to anyone else..?

There are a few things that I am still learning and I kind of like that, I think the more you learn the more you realise you don't know, so I hope I'm always learning new things! Here are the main things I am trying to figure out...

Photos- taking photos is tricky, particularly with make up/nail polish I think it is important that things look true to colour, and I don't always feel like I am very good at this! Sometimes I blame the weather... But I'm working on it! I'm also not sure what the rules are about using photos from websites, so I'm just taking my own. This is working for me at the moment and I think I would only want to use other people's photos if I was trying to re-create a look or something, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it! Which brings me to my third photo-related qualm... I am a little nervous about taking photos of myself, I think this is something that will just come in time and my blogging/photography confidence will grow, I just think some people are amazing at this and it's a little intimidating, but I'll get there!

Replying to comments- This is something I am super confused about, I don't know the right way to respond to comments left on my blog, I am pretty sure that if I reply to it on my blog that that person won't be notified, but sometimes I feel a little silly responding on their blog under a post they have done about something totally unrelated, so I'm still working on the best way to do this, but rest assured, I am most definitely reading all of the comments, loving that you guys are relating to some of my posts, and writing down all the make up recommendations, I love it!

Lastly I just wanted to share with you some blogs that have helped me learn more about blogging, IFB (or Independent Fashion Bloggers) have a lot of useful blogging tips which I have enjoyed reading, and of course Vanisha, I just get so excited every time she has a new post up on her new series on blogging, it is interesting, thought provoking and absolutely invaluable to someone new to the blogging world like me.

Whether you have been blogging for two days, two months like me, or ten years I think everyone brings something unique to the table and I think that is one of the things I love most about it. I love finding new blogs and if there is something that catches my eye letting that person know! It's so interesting and I very much look forward to reading more from all of you.

I would love if you told me a little about your blogging experience below, and am always happy to accept advice!

  1. Hi lovely, with the photos - I've found that photographing my hands are the hardest! Even if someone else is taking the picture. I use photos by other people on my blog but always provide a link to the original source. With the commenting, I always go to the person's blog and leave a reply. If they've asked a question, I'll reply under their comment on my blog but also still copy and paste the answer on their blog so they definitely see it. You are doing so well in such a short period of time Zoe! I was not even close to this when I started! I do think photos are important, I try to keep mine quite uniform in terms of the size/width. Because I don't do any post-editing on my photos, I have to pay more attention to composition and the photos I take. It's time consuming but a few of my blog friends have said my photos have been great. It's been years of trial and error. It takes time, but I think wanting to be a better blogger and being conscious of that is half the battle won! Happy blogging xoxox

  2. The replies to comments thing bugs me. I don't even know why blogger has a reply option if the original poster doesn't get a notification of the reply! If someone asks me a question I go to their blog and reply on one of their posts. It's a bit weird, but it's the only way I've found that actually works. I know some people reply in an email reply to the notification you receive in your email, but a lot of people have their email hidden and as such are set to 'no-reply@blogger.com' which means you can't reply that way! I'd love it if blogger allowed original commenters to be notified of replies!

  3. Hi! I always thought it was a bit like facebook with replies. I thought if I replied to their comment then they would get notified! So glad you mentioned this! I have been making an effort to hit that reply button and resond to them! That is quite silly that the option is there and it doesn't do anything!

  4. Hello my love
Love this post, it has made me think of my own blogging behaviour,
    1. I always try and take my own photos, I think that creating oringinal content is really important and it shows that you have put the time and effort into creating a blog post. Sometimes though you need to borrow photos and as long as you have permission to use photos and credit accordingly too that is ok.
    2. Commenting is soooooo hard! I hate the thought of people thinking I didnt read their comment or dont care about people commenting. As much as possible I comment on peoples blogs - I leave a comment in relation to their post and then make a segway to what they commented on mine - it has worked so far!
Looking forward to talking blogging tomorrow xxx

  5. I can totally relate to how replying to comments can be confusing! It took me months to realise that just because I reply to someone's comment on my blog, the original poster isn't notified! Such a vital feature that's missing on Blogger unfortunately :(

  6. I love this. I'm a relatively new blogger myself, having started back in November, and I'm still learning everyday. But. I love it. Even the stress that comes along with it, due to my 8-5 work days and homework that I have to do.

I'm so glad that you stopped by my blog! I look forward to looking around yours more as your newest follower. :)

Also- I hope this posts correctly because I'm on my phone at the moment. Ha.

  7. I can relate to absolutely everything in this post Zoe, thank you so much for sharing!! I didn't know you only been blogging for a few months though...you seem much more experienced :)

I'm slowly but surely getting the hang of things too, and also secretly wondering if the thrill of someone commenting or replying ever gets old! I've felt so welcomed into the blogging world and have learnt so much already. I'm still a little shy with the photos too though and for some reason by boyfriend is convinced I'm going to get stalked so it could be a while before I get too adventurous with my outfit posts. I'm enjoying the ride though and so glad I have such lovely ladies such as yourself to share it with! x
